Hiring New Hair Stylists, Barbers, or Spa Therapists

Are you trying to grow your team and hire a new stylist, barber, or spa therapist?

You are not alone. This is one of the most common challenges we are facing right now.

So this week we want to cover a few quick tips for how you can market your business to new employees.

John: So the main challenge that I hear about over and over right now is how to attract good talent to your salon business.

It seems like this has always been a challenge, but after COVID, now it seems like the situation is much more difficult. And so in, in this video, we wanted to share some of our tips for how you can go about this and how you can attract good talent to your salon.

We always think about what we send out on social media, not just to our customers, but also to other hairdressers.

Salon Hiring Tips

My: Okay. So today I will be sharing my best tips on what I do at the salon. We always think about what we send out on social media, not just to our customers, but also to other hairdressers.

What kind of vibe do we have with each other and the team? Because today young people seek work where they feel that they reflect their identity.

So what type of person am I, and where do I work? It’s important. So I think it’s good to think about that on your social media, not just to have pictures of hair, but also to have clips and pictures of the people that work there.

John: Like we often talk about here on the channel, the importance of your brand, the importance of the vibe that you’re sending out in the context of attracting clients, but obviously, it’s the same when it comes to attracting staff, right?

Yeah. Make sure that you also have that part of how you communicate your vibe and what you’re about.

I would also say prioritize the channels that those people have decided to follow you on.

And also like to build on that in terms of the channels and the tactics to use to reach potential new staff members. I would also say to prioritize the channels that those people have decided to follow you on.

They do that because they like the work you’re doing and they like your vibe and that’s why they’ve chosen to, for example, follow you on Instagram or on your Facebook or subscribe to your email list or whatever it might be.  So start activating your followers on those channels.

Yeah. Would make a lot of sense. Cause then, you have people who actually already know what you’re doing and would like to follow you there. And are in on the same vibe as you.

My: That’s not only attracting people who apply to you. It’s also what type of people you want to attract. Yeah. So that’s also a big thing. When you send out the vibe, that’s people you will get back to again, as we said.

John: So let’s think about that. Cause obviously there are more channels you can use. You can do job post things. Reach out to cosmetology schools and all of that, which is, could be a good way to go as well, but start first with making sure that you’re, using those channels that your followers have already chosen, to follow you.

Tips on Salon Hiring Applications

My: Yeah. Because we get a lot of people that are searching or sending us an application like spontaneously. I don’t know if you’re looking for someone, but I would be interested so interested in it.

So I also always save them because maybe we’re not looking right now, but in a few months ahead, somebody’s pregnant or going on maternity leave or moving to another town or something’s happened.

So then you also have a little collection of people that you can contact.

And also, maybe they’re not looking for a job,  but my friend is. And if she’s interested and followed your blog or social media,  maybe she, her friend is also the same type of person that she is.

I strongly recommend you do is to add a career page to your website.

John: Another concrete thing that I strongly recommend you do is to add a career page to your website. So on your website, you have a page that’s dedicated to this where you include words like “work as a stylist in this town”.

And, you’re including those words on the site, because that also means when people are looking for jobs in your area and looking for the type of jobs that you have available, It’s much more likely that they would find you and then you have a process there that also sells them a bit on why they should work for you.

And so on that page, they can submit an application directly there as well would be a good way to kind get those applications,

I know this is a big challenge and it’s particularly a big challenge, right now. These are some of the things to help you there.

I don’t know if you have something else that you want to add to that, generally, like it’s very similar to how you would market to new clients, right?

Yeah. It’s just, that it’s a different target group, which is stylists, but yeah, all of the things that we talk about here on the channel with building your vibe and campaign activities which you certainly can run as well.

You can do a dedicated Facebook ad, for example, to recruit people. You can do job postings that I said earlier make sure you first go off to those channels where they have started to follow you.

And don’t be afraid to be personal there. Like show when you’re off training or show some fun stuff that you do in the salon.

My: Yeah. And don’t be afraid to be personal there. Like show when you’re off training or show some fun stuff that you do in the salon.

That is not related to hair, but maybe when you’re at dinner together or when you have a movie night with your colleagues.

It doesn’t have to be a long post, but some small posts here and there. Where it creates a feeling of, oh, they have a very good team vibe there. And the customers and new staff will like that.

John: Yeah, absolutely. Another good channel is of course your existing team. No brainer maybe, but make sure that people working for you are aware that you’re looking to hire so that they reach out within their community and generally activate your network, right?

So the more connected you are in the local area the better. So activate that network, they will also help you find people that could be a good match for you.

All right. So that was some of the tips to help you along the way.
